INTRODUCTION
In the previous lessons, we introduced you to some phrases you can use when you’re in the Czech Republic.
In this lesson, we are going to cover “How do you read this?”
GRAMMAR POINT
In Czech “How do you read this word?” is
Jak se čte tohle slovo?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Jak se čte toh-le slo-vo?
Once more:
Jak se čte tohle slovo?
The first word, jak, means “how.”
(slow) Jak.
Jak.
Next we have se čte translated in English as “to read”.
(slow) Se čte.
Se čte.
Then we have tohle, the neutral form for “this”.
(slow) Toh-le.
Tohle.
At the end we have slovo which means “word”.
(slow) Slo-vo.
Slovo.
The entire sentence again is:
(slow) Jak se čte toh-le slo-vo?
Jak se čte tohle slovo?
“How do you read this word?”
You might also like to ask, “How do you pronounce this word?”. In Czech, this is
Jak se vyslovuje tohle slovo?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Jak se vys-lo-vu-je toh-le slo-vo?

Jak se vyslovuje tohle slovo?
The new word in this question is vyslovuje which is a form of the verb translated as “to pronounce”.
