INTRODUCTION
In the previous lesson, we covered how to ask where things are. In this lesson, we’ll introduce you to another useful phrase for finding the place you need. This lesson’s phrase is “Is there [some place] near here?”
GRAMMAR POINT
First, we need a place. Let’s use the word nemocnice, which means “hospital"
(slow) Ne-moc-ni-ce.
Nemocnice.
In Czech, “Is there a hospital near here?” is
Je tady blízko nemocnice?
Let’s break it down:
(slow) Je ta-dy blíz-ko ne-moc-ni-ce?
Once again:
Je tady blízko nemocnice?
The first word, je, can be translated in English as “is” or “there is”.
(slow) Je.
Je.
After that comes tady which means “here”
(slow) Ta-dy.
Tady.
The third word blízko means “near”.
(slow) Blíz-ko.
Blízko.
And at the end comes nemocnice meaning “a hospital”.
All together, it’s
Je tady blízko nemocnice?
Don’t forget to add at the beginning the polite expression promiňte meaning “excuse me”.
Replace the word nemocnice with any other word and your question will look good.
Now let’s imagine that you need to withdraw some money from your bank account.
In Czech, “Is there an ATM near here?” is
Je tady blízko bankomat?
(slow) Je tady blízko bankomat?
Je tady blízko bankomat?
The only word that changes is the thing you are looking for, in this case bankomat.
(slow) Ban-ko-mat.
Bankomat.
Once again, that’s
Je tady blízko bankomat?
What if you need to exchange some money? You’ll need to find a exchange office.
“Is there an exchange office around here?” in Czech is:
Je tady blízko směnárna?
(slow) Je ta-dy blíz-ko smě-nár-na?
Je tady blízko směnárna?
The only word that changes in this case is the word for exchange office - směnárna.
(slow) Smě-nár-na.
Směnárna.
Once again, that’s
Je tady blízko směnárna?
