INTRODUCTION |
This lesson's phrase will help you take matters into your own hands! In this lesson we’ll take a look at the word “please,” which will be very important when you need to ask for something. |
GRAMMAR POINT |
Maybe you remember it from a previous lesson. In Czech, “please” is: |
Prosím. |
Let’s break it down: |
(slow) Pro-sím. |
Once more: |
Prosím. |
Let’s take a closer look at Prosím. It’s a particle but it can also be used as a verb to mean “(I) ask for”. You can change it into a more polite form by adding the pronoun Vás, which means “you” in plural or “you” in polite speech. |
(slow) Vás |
Vás |
Prosím vás |
(slow) Pro-sím vás. |
Prosím vás. |
If you speak to one person or to a friend, you don’t need to use Vás. Instead of it, you can say Tě which also means “you”, but in singular. |
(slow) Tě |
Tě |
Prosím tě |
(slow) Pro-sím tě. |
Prosím tě. |
・ |
There may be situations when you’re asking for forgiveness or for a big favor, when the person you’re speaking to is in a bad mood, and you feel that prosím is not enough. You just need to add one more word, and the politeness level will increase. Say Moc prosím. This expression is literally translated as „please, a lot” or “ask a lot” |
Let’s hear that again: |
(slow)Moc pro-sím. |
Moc prosím. |
You can add Tě or Vás if you want to address a specific person, or say it more politely. |
Moc tě prosím |
(slow) Moc tě pro-sím. |
Moc tě prosím. |
Moc vás prosím |
(slow) Moc vás pro-sím. |
Moc vás prosím. |
・ |
When you want to ask for something specifically, say Tohle, prosím for “this please” and Tamto, prosím for “that please”. |
Tohle means “this” and Tamto is the word for “that”. Both are neutrals. |
Let’s break the phrases down and hear them one more time: |
(slow) To-hle pro-sím. |
Tohle prosím. |
And |
(slow) Tam-to, pro-sím. |
Tamto, prosím. |
