Michael: Expressions That Involve but Are Unrelated to Tombs
Michael: Hi everyone, and welcome back to CzechClass101.com. I'm Michael.
Veronika: And I'm Veronika!
Michael: This is Must-Know Czech Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 17. In this lesson, you'll learn expressions that involve but are unrelated to tombs.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
Michael: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Veronika: vrátit se do hrobu
Veronika: být jednou nohou v hrobě
Veronika: plakat na špatném hrobě
Veronika: být věrný až za hrob
Michael: Veronika, what's our first expression?
Veronika: vrátit se do hrobu
Michael: literally meaning "to return to the grave." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to send someone away because he or she is too old."

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to brush off someone by saying that they are too old. Be careful when you use this expression, it can be very offensive to elderly people.

Michael: literally meaning "to be one foot in the grave." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to be very seriously ill or very badly injured, in danger of death."

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to express that someone is close to death.

Michael: "At that time, the poor man was already close to death."

Michael: literally meaning "to cry on the wrong grave." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to be barking up the wrong tree."

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to say that some activity is useless.

Michael: literally meaning "to be faithful beyond the grave." But, when it's used as a slang expression, it means "absolutely devoted, faithful."

Michael: Use this slang expression when you want to tell someone how faithful they are.
Michael : Now let's hear an example sentence.
Veronika: [NORMAL] Byl jí věrný až za hrob, nikdy se znovu neoženil. [SLOW] Byl jí věrný až za hrob, nikdy se znovu neoženil.
Michael: "He was really faithful to her, he never remarried."
