Jennifer: Welcome to 3-Minute Czech Season 1, Lesson 7 - Do You Speak English? In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask and answer the question Do you speak English? in Czech.

Jennifer: Here's the formal way to ask 'Can you speak English?' in Czech.
Martin: [Normal] Umíte anglicky?
Jennifer: First is a word meaning 'you can (polite)'
Martin: [Normal] umíte [Slow] umíte
Jennifer: Last is the word meaning 'English'
Martin: [Normal] anglicky [Slow] anglicky
Jennifer: Note the rising intonation. Listen again to the formal question meaning 'Can you speak English?'
Martin: [Slow] Umíte anglicky? [Normal] Umíte anglicky?
Jennifer: Now, imagine you're speaking to a stranger. Here's the informal way to ask, 'Can you speak English?'
Martin: [Normal] Umíš anglicky?
Jennifer: First is a word meaning 'you can'

Jennifer: Last is the word meaning 'English'

Martin: These phrases are still useful in the Czech republic, but mostly with older people because young Czechs are mostly able to speak English. An additional suggestion is to try to ask your questions using your hands and gestures.
